How to make hand wash from a bar of soap ~ The Body Shop

I decided to look-into the possibilities of making my own liquid hand wash, when it became impossible to buy hand wash in the shops and on-line back in April 2020. This was when the pandemic we all know as Covid-19 started to spread across the UK. I love soap bars I but find them to be a little messy, as they can turn slimly and end up making a mess all over the sink. It’s so much easier for me and the kids to use liquid hand wash dispensed from a pump bottle. So with this in-mind I decided to do some research into making my own hand wash. How hard can it be?

My findings

As I am a Body Shop At Home Consultant, I have many bars of soap and beauty products around the house (my stock draw is fit to burst). So I decided to see if I could turn one of my solid bars of soap from The Body Shop into a liquid hand wash. I remembered seeing a post from one of my friends. She had tried to make hand wash from a bar of soap from The Body Shop and it seemed to have worked. So I decided to put it to the test and have some fun!

Getting the kids involved

Getting the kids involved was so much fun. We are currently home-schooling due to the lockdown in the UK. Therefore having a variety of fun and practical experiments to do is a great way to bring fun into learning. You only need a few simple kitchen utensils to make the hand wash. You need a hob to melt the soap in the water but it only needs to be on a low heat. We had so much fun trying this experiment out. It was so simple and easy to do, therefore anyone can give this a go.

What you will need

  • a bar of soap from the body shop ( you will only need 25 grams/quarter of a bar)
  • 500 ml of water
  • A grater ( or you can chop it up with a knife )
  • A pan
  • A spoon to stir
  • A jug or funnel
  • A hand wash bottle with a pump
  • Stove or hob to heat up the water
  • Weighing scales or just cut the bar in to 4 as you only use one quarter.

How To make it

  • First of all wash out the hand wash bottle you wish to use and make sure the pump has been rinsed through.
  • Cut and weigh out 25 grams of your chosen soap bar and grate or chop into small chunks, the smaller the chunks, the quicker it will melt.
  • Measure out 500ml of water and place in a pan, along with your grated 25 grams of soap.
  • Gently heat on a low heat and stir until it has melted then leave to cool.
  • Once it has cooled for about 10/15 minuets transfer it into a jug or if using a funnel you can use the funnel to directly pour into your hand wash bottles.
  • Pour in to your hand wash bottles and leave to cool. As it cools it will thicken in consistency.
  • After about an hour your hand wash is good to be used.

How did it turn out?

Overall I’m happy with how it turned out. I found the hand wash lathered really well and it did a great job of washing my hands. My hands felt squeaky clean and once they were dry, they felt really moisturised and smooth. The hand wash turned out lovely but it did loose most of it’s colour pigment. It doesn’t stay vibrant like the soap bars. It does the job of a hand was. If you wanted to make your hand wash more antibacterial, you could always add a few drops of tea tree oil. Best of all it was fun to make with the kids and we will defiantly be making more. The house was filled with the most amazing smell during the process. I would recommend anyone giving this a go.

The Body Shop soap bars have glycerin in, which helps the soap bar to turn into hand wash. I have seen recipes online which require glycerine to be added, in order for the soap bar to turn in to hand wash. This is what makes this a two product recipe

Organic Fat Free Vegan Rice Pudding

A family favourite

One of my favourite things I love to batch make every week is my organic vegan rice pudding. It’s so delicious, filling and made from such natural ingredients it’s a winner. Ready and on hand to tuck into from the fridge, gorgeous HOT or COLD, this rice pudding is perfect as a delicious Breakfast, Pudding, snack, heated up it makes for a perfect supper, all cosy and carbohydrate rich, it’s great to help aid a restful sleep. You can even whiz a spoonful up with some almond milk for a bedtime smoothie maybe by adding a spoonful of cacao and/or a couple of dates. I even indulge in a portion as a main meal and the kids love it!

Ingredients

Serves 6 – 8 dependant or portion sizes 

Method

  • In a large pan add 1 cup of pudding rice and one teaspoon of cinnamon along with one pinch of sea salt
  • Pour in 1ltr of unsweetened almond milk
  • Stir on a low heat, cover and leave to simmer stirring occasionally for about 30 – 40 minuets, until it looks a nice thick consistency and the rice is cooked through and no longer hard
  • Once cooked turn of the heat and leave to sit covered for 10 minutes or so to cool and thicken to a good eating temperature.
  • Serve topped with your favourite topping, ie agave nectar, sweet freedom choc pot, coconut sugar, cinnamon, cacao nibs, nuts, fruit – the possibilities are endless try out a few different ones and tell me your favourite. 
  • remember you can always add a spoonful with some almond or coconut milk to make a yummy bedtime smoothie or healthy breakfast by adding some cacao, dates, cinnamon and/or any other ingredients you love. https://www.instagram.com/p/BvzHMlknID9/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
